The Uniqueness of Proctology as a Field of Health
The creation of a trusting relationship between the treating physician and the patient requires mutual effort and compliance. Communication must be cultivated on both sides, leading ultimately to improved health outcomes. Lack of understanding and disregard are two factors that certainly do not help.
Proctology, as an integral part of medicine, also falls within this framework. However, here things are considerably more complex, and the reason is simple. The nature of the anatomical area of the anus, as well as the values and social beliefs formed throughout human civilization, create countless obstacles. The proctologist and the patient are called upon to overcome these obstacles, which are mainly related to demeaning behaviors.
The Proper Approach of the Proctologist
The practice of proctology is based on the warm and friendly attitude of the physician towards the patient. Respect for the diversity of fellow human beings must be guaranteed. The interaction between the two sides should occur in an atmosphere of mutual trust and cordiality. Usually, people suffering from conditions in this area are embarrassed to speak about their problem and approach medical staff with suspicion. Unfortunately, however, there are also health professionals who address these individuals in a rude and vulgar manner, often with an attitude that borders on racism.
The proctologist must treat patients without prejudice and taboos, regardless of the type of condition they present. Equally important, however, is the ability to understand and respect the personality of the patient as if it were their own—that which we otherwise call EMPATHY! The physician must also not forget the importance of non-verbal communication. And above all: they must bring HUMOR into the environment of their practice, as it constitutes the best antidote to embarrassment and cold formality!
