Some types cause benign warts; others are linked to cancers of the cervix, anus, throat, and pharynx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transmission &amp; Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HPV is transmitted via sexual contact, regardless of gender or orientation. Most infections are asymptomatic and resolve within two years. However, high-risk types (like 16 and 18) may cause precancerous lesions and cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anal HPV infection is common in high-risk groups: 60% in MSM vs. 15% in heterosexual men. Transmission can occur via skin contact, fingers, objects, or indirect exposure. Condoms reduce but don\u2019t eliminate risk. HIV-positive individuals are especially vulnerable due to reduced immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical Effects of HPV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Benign lesions:<\/strong> Types 6 and 11 cause warts\u2014harmless but bothersome growths.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Oncogenic lesions:<\/strong> Types 16 and 18 can cause HSIL, a precursor to cancer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cancer risk:<\/strong> HSIL has a 10\u201315% risk of progressing to cancer within 3\u20135 years, especially in immunocompromised patients.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anal Cancer Risk Factors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HIV infection and low CD4 counts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Immunosuppressive therapy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Multiple sexual partners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>History of HPV-related dysplasia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HPV and Anal Cancer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anal cancer is rare in the general population but more common in MSM and HIV+ individuals. MSM are 20 times more likely to develop anal cancer.
